VoN 2 3/4

So our pre-stream Sunday night guild chat went something like this:

Me: Wow, the tablet’s cooperating, OBS is cooperating, I’ve got everything set up and ready to go, and still have plenty of time before the stream.

Comic: You know you just jinxed yourself, right?

Me: Haha, yeah, probably.

This is what I get for thinking everything was under control – after having various technical difficulties throughout the stream, the video froze an hour and 20 minutes in. I was going to chop it off after that point, but the audio continues. So if you want to listen, it’s all there; if you want to watch, you’re only going to see VoN 1 and 2 plus about 3/4 of VoN 3.

Just as it freezes, you can hear me saying something about my screen doing weird things. Those “weird things” involved flashing a few times. No idea what happened there. It may have been something to do with my lousy connection – if you watch the little box in the upper right corner, you’ll see it go to yellow a fair few times. Or maybe it was my video card, which was VERY unhappy; the fan kept kicking into Super Ultra High Gear.

Unfortunately I didn’t realize what had happened until someone brought it up in Twitch chat when we were nearly through Haywire Foundry. I had to reboot DDO after The Prisoner, but it was working fine once I signed back on… at least until it, y’know, wasn’t. We’re a bit shy of the beholder area when it goes out.

So you’ll just have to take my word for it that Comic and I were one-shotting mobs left and right with 200K damage rolls and 500K crits. Yep. That really happened. Uh-huh. *wink wink, nudge nudge*

I was actually hoping to pull a Seal of the Sword of Shadow, but – spoiler alert – I didn’t get one. Comic definitely expanded his scroll collection, though! And I don’t think I got too loopy (for me, anyway…); having a bit of a fibromyalgia flare-up after a busy weekend and took a muscle relaxant, which helps but makes me spaced out and groggy for a good 24-36 hours.

If you’ve been to OurDDO since Saturday-ish, you might have noticed that the icons look different, and not in a good way. Back when I still used a free server for it, I stored all my graphics on Photobucket so I wouldn’t have to worry about running out of storage.

Apparently Photobucket, with no notice (or at least none that I ever saw), has changed its policy and no longer allows linking from free accounts. So all of the icons now have a Photobucket message that says, “PLEASE UPDATE YOUR ACCOUNT TO ENABLE 3RD PARTY HOSTING.”

This did not make me happy, but I thought, well, I’ll see how much it is, maybe I’ll just pony up and get it over with.

Nope. Not gonna happen. If you want third-party hosting from your Photobucket, it’ll set you back $39.99…

Sorry not sorry, I’m not paying $480 a year to be able to link a few dozen icons. So in the near future, I’ll be moving the OurDDO icons to my own server space. They’re icons; it’s not like they’re going to eat up a lot of storage, and I bumped the account up to premium anyway so it’s got scads of space now. Hopefully I’ll get around to that sometime this week. Sucks that Photobucket adds long random character strings to all your filenames; if not for that, I could just do a quick bulk upload and then search/replace the base URL. Wonder if those strings were implemented to try to keep people from doing that?

Oddly enough, the images on this blog that are linked from Photobucket are still working.

It’s been suggested to me, more than once, that I do some kind of fundraising to cover the cost (not specifically the Photobucket thing, but OurDDO in general), but… meh. No one asked me to put OurDDO together (well, OK, back when MyDDO was being taken down, people asked, but I was already in the process of doing it anyway). I used free servers for it for the first couple of years, and it’s really not that expensive for the account I have now. Plus, it was my choice to upgrade the account to premium. It would be, at best, not at all fair to ask my readers and/or viewers (all, what, two of you? ;)) to foot the bill. At worst, it would be… something I probably shouldn’t say if I want to keep this PG-13-ish. Suffice to say I will never be lazy or ignorant enough to beg people to bankroll any aspect of my DDO experience. 🙂

Ba-ba-ba, barbarian

The best thing about this post is the title, because it works with both “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys AND “La la la, linoleum,” as sung by Sesame Street’s Ernie (much to buddy Bert’s chagrin) in the “L Is Such a Lovely Letter” song.

And now I want to filk both of those.

But anyway.

I’ve been wanting to get Niituna, my raised-by-orcs dorf barb, on the livestream for a while now. This was her lucky week – except for Comcrap Comcrapping out as we were headed to The Unquiet Graves after completing Impossible Demands.

Tuna’s probably the toon I do the most roleplaying with. I can pretty much be me and still get into the personalities of most of my other toons, but it’s a bit harder with a barb who would gladly have big ol’ zeroes in everything but Str and Con if she could.

She seems to loot a lot of shields she doesn’t want (“Dose tings for stoopamid palamadins”) and would not be caught dead drinking broccoli juice (“Vegematables and salamads is what skinnamy rogue eatses”).

Considering how VERY undergeared she is (level 7 armor at level 20 is just the tip of the iceamaburg), she fared mostly well. I think the only death she had came during The Lost Thread, when she insisted on finding all da traps wit her face.

A little of Tuna tends to go a long way, so I haven’t yet decided if she’ll be on next week’s stream as well. But if you still have a Tuna hankering, you can always go read the post from the time she hijacked this blog.

Catching some breaks

I never got around to blogging last week! Oh noes! And I nearly didn’t get around to it this week either… but for the best possible reason, because this past (extended) weekend was VACATION!

I spent four-plus days (Wednesday night through Monday morning) in New England. Had a mini Flower Sniffers meetup with Seki and Slvr, went to the New England Aquarium, rode lots of commuter trains, and got to spend Quality Time With A Guy. I even cooked dinner, which turned out – by my standards – surprisingly well (tasted good, no one died). And I leveled up in Pokémon Go, found some really cool stuff during a few thrift shop/flea market runs, and got my nails done by a professional for the first time in my life. So YAY vacation!

DDO, of course, had to pick THAT WEEKEND to offer a renown boost. I really didn’t want to take time away from Fun Vacation Stuff to play a lot of DDO, but I did log in every day for my double daily dice. And I ran Acanthia through the Deneith part of the heroic Pirates saga, ’cause she’d already done the 3BC part. And I turned sagas in. All told, we gained about four levels. If only DDO had put off the bonus ONE MORE WEEK! I’d’ve had a LOT more sagas done; got a number of toons who are only three or four quests short.

So since I neither ran much DDO nor blogged last week, this week’s DDO video is from last week’s epic Storm Horns questing, when we ran A Break in the Ice and Breaking the Ranks. Hence the blog title – plus, you could definitely say that getting to go on vacation qualified as catching some breaks.

Tuna should enjoy Storm Horns, considering it has TWO quests with “break” in their names – she does love breaking stuff. Or as she calls it, “SMASHING ALL DA TINGS!” I’m hoping to run her on the stream this week; she’s about 80K shy of heroic cap, so soon she’ll be able to run with everybody’s epics. Meanwhile, Zak is up to level 5 and completed his first successful four-skull reaper solos tonight. However, three-skull Redfang was just a bit too much for him. Sadly, I’m still a very, very long way from having enough reaper XP on anyone to get the reaper pets. *sadface*

Just because I think they’re kinda cool, I’m throwing in a couple of videos from my trip to the New England Aquarium. Here are some fishies… some probably very bored fishies. I mean, I’D be bored if I did nothing but go in circles all day. But at least they look good doing it.

And… JELLYFISH. OMG. I could’ve watched these little guys for HOURS. Except other people wanted to see them too so eventually I had to get out of the way, but I did buy a really cool hoodie with a glittery jellyfish on it from the gift shop.

Getting stoned on the stream

No, I haven’t been engaging in illegal activities whilst livestreaming! But this week I did get stoned – soulstoned, that is – a bit more often than I’m accustomed to.

As I can be fond of saying, I have Even, and then I have 18 other toons with varying degrees of gimpiness. I can count on Even; her attitude is pretty much, “OK, I’m getting through this and so are you even if I have to carry you through and rez you on the other side.”

But for this past Sunday’s stream, I wasn’t on Even. Instead, I had level 7 Favored Soul Meren getting some much-needed third-life XP as Seki and I took our lowbies into Sorrowdusk.

For some reason that’s not an area I run very often, so I’m not that familiar with it. I kept thinking that at some point we were going to have to assemble parts of a turtle… in hindsight, I think that quest is actually in 3BC.

But I did correctly remember the bridges with the big scary traps. Miraculously I managed not to die in those despite my paltry 5 jump score (having exactly as many jump pots as I needed helped).

Unfortunately I did manage to get one-shotted several times by the mean, nasty, totally overpowered mobs. I mean, they killed me, so clearly they were overpowered, right? RIGHT?!

… OK, or maybe Meren’s just gimpy and a bit undergeared. Oops.

I think she ended up dying more often than Flower… kinda humiliating considering that Meren’s supposed to be a healery type, AND was the only one in the party who could rez. Seki got quite a workout running her stone back to the shrine!

Once we had the first leg of Sorrowdusk done, it was time for Seki to log. Several Twitch chatters suggested Tear of Dhakaan for Meren’s next effort.

She didn’t have the stats to get several of the shards, and her humiliation grew when Laerathor the hireling was able to pull the Wisdom rune she couldn’t get. Yes, Meren is dumber than a hireling, and now there’s video proof!

But she did get the completion, and was able to manage her spell points better than Laerathor managed his, despite her lower Wis score. And the evening yielded a goodly bit of XP – when she was done Tear, a few minutes in Searing Heights was enough to get her to level 8.

OurDDO is almost functioning at 100% again. I managed to fix a rather major cosmetic issue all by myself! Both HTML and CSS were involved, neither of which I’m overly proficient in.

There is still an issue with the feed aggregate script, which is a Google thing and waaaay over my head, not displaying any posts at all if certain blogs are included. Figuring out which blogs cause the issue is not difficult, but it’s long and tedious. If the site isn’t displaying your posts, I probably just haven’t gotten to verifying that your blog isn’t one of the ones the script doesn’t like; I’m adding the blogs back in one at a time and checking after each one to see if everything’s still working.

(Swash)buckling down

Having already completed the Three-Barrel Cove portion of the epic Pirates of the Thunder Seas saga, the Flower Sniffers took a break from reaper mode to get started on the Sentinels of Stormreach half.

It was a good opportunity for me to dust off poor, gimpy swashbuckler Reera, who’s not gotten much playing time lately, since she had Seki and Slvr around to help keep her squishy butt alive. Reera’s *really* not cut out for soloing much.

She’s also not overly cut out for epic elite, but we tried it anyway – and hey, we didn’t do half bad! Had a pretty easy cruise through Bargain of Blood and The Black Loch before Seki had to log.

… also, I just realized that, considering the saga name, I should have talked like a pirate at least once or twice. I did talk like a kobold several times – maybe I could say I was talking like a kobold pirate?

Citi had shown up in the meantime, so we dragged him off to the Subterrane to run Vision of Destruction. For one thing, I still had about an hour of stream time left. For another, I thought it was something Reera could handle. AND, I wanted video evidence that I CAN INDEED FIND VoD.

Side note: The very first time I ever found VoD by myself, I was on Tirae, my Cannith monk, farming planar shards. I was just running around with no clear idea where I wanted to go, when I suddenly realized that I was standing next to one of the runes you have to light up to open the barrier to VoD. Figures the first time I ever managed to find it on my own was completely by accident!

Poor Citi didn’t realize we were schlepping him into a raid. Citi has a deep-seated aversion to raids. We shanghai’d him in there anyway. Glad we did, too, because 1) with Slvr tanking and Reera gimping, we REALLY needed his DPS, and 2) he was on his pally and got Divine Vengeance! The toon’s a bit overlevel to get a WHOLE lot of use out of it, but definitely a great thing to have sitting around for TRing.

Reera’d hit 25 whilst running 3BC the other night, and she’s now off to a good start toward 26. I’m hoping to get some sagas done this week; I have a feeling it won’t be long before we get a renown weekend, seeing as how it’s been a while since the last one. And I need to get Zak and Laegonn to 30 (Zak’s almost there, just needs about another 450K) so they can TR and switch places – Zak’s going warlock while Laegonn will become a pale master (because right now, Laegonn is absolute proof that all warlocks are NOT OP).

Since this past weekend featured a crafting experience bonus, I considered doing some crafting for the stream… except I’ve never really gotten into crafting all that much. But that bonus was too tempting to pass up, so after we finished VoD and I closed out the stream, I logged in Even to take advantage of it.

Slvr and Citi told me to do the tutorial in House K so I could get a 75% crafting XP booster – and now I kinda wish I HAD streamed it, or at least recorded it, because it was a great example of what NOT to do. Accidentally used the disjuncter instead of the dissolver on the second step and couldn’t get the tutorial to advance. So I bought a cheap quarterstaff from the AH and tried to do it again… but it STILL wouldn’t advance. Citi and Slvr kept suggesting new things to try, none of which worked. It wasn’t until I thought, hmmm, maybe I should just trash the original q-staff, the one I disjunted instead of dissolving, that I was able to complete the tutorial. Guess the Maker was pissed at me for ruining the weapon he gave me!

After that it went quite well, though, and Even’s crafting level went from 90 to… 134, I think, aided by approximately half a million plat spent on essences and gear to decon. I even remembered to decon all my lootgen from tonight’s questing instead of vendoring it… although it was a little discouraging to find that yielded only enough essences for not quite three shards.

Another side note that probably isn’t interesting to anyone but me: I won all the auctions I was bidding on, so my stash of Bigby’s Guiding Hands is starting to look pretty respectable. I have at least 50-ish of every color… except red. I have no red – yet. But I can make a lovely colorful display with my blue, green, orange, purple, white, and yellow ones!

I still need to prettify OurDDO. I’m just lazeh. And I have an elderly, attention-demanding, hypochondriac, guilt-tripping mother to deal with. AND two new kitties to play with, when they’re not amusing themselves by shredding rolls of paper towels everywhere. (They’re lucky they’re so cute!)

Meanwhile, I had a bit of an idea. As I think I’ve mentioned before, I’m not keen on the suggestion to add a PayPal donate button or anything similar to the site. But I’m kinda considering adding some ads. Not generic intrusive spammy ads, but something in the right-hand column, just some small-ish boxes, that would be available for DDO bloggers, etc., for a nominal fee – a way to promote DDO blogs, livestreams, podcasts, etc., and cover the cost of server space and domain and all that.

They’d have to fit into specified dimensions, and I’d be happy to make a graphic at no charge for anyone who didn’t want to do their own.

So I’d like to get some feedback on this. Good idea or not? Is it something you’d use? I’d like the ads to rotate rather than have the same ones all the time, so what duration should they be? I’m thinking by the week or by the month. Any thoughts on rates?

Rogues are red, violence is blue…

… that makes no sense, and the rhyming sucks too.

So yeah. Snappy titles are not my thing tonight. LOL. But you’ll get to read about the story of my sucky rogue, and how I lost a bet for 100K plat.

With Even growing frustrated over her continued lack of a Jibbers blade, and with Meren growing frustrated over being a sucky, sucky, SUCKY rogue, I decided to give Even a bit of a rest and start pushing Meren to 30 so she can do an eTR/TR combo and go back to being an only somewhat sucky Favored Soul.

I’ve never been an XP-per-minute type of player – I mean, c’mon, my guild is called the Flower Sniffers. Most of the time this suits me just fine. But when your level 25 rogue is at the end of her roguish rope and threatening to blow a gasket if you don’t TR her back to Favored Soul, like, yesterday, you start thinking a lot more about getting lots of XPs in littles of times.

The Sniffers stepped up to the plate in grand style. Devil Assault, Wiz King, VoN 3, Offering of Blood, plus some surprisingly fun runs through Spies in the House, and suddenly Meren had gone from 25 to well into 29 in far less time than I’d have thought possible. You can see Citi, Vey, and I doing some XP runs in the above video.

She was still close to a million XP away when I logged her in tonight. I found a couple of major slayer pots languishing in her TR cache, chugged a superior XP elixir as well, and took her on a spin through Storm Horns S/R/E because 1) good XP, and 2) it’s my favorite area in the game. She had just quaffed her second slayer pot when Vey logged in and asked me if I wanted to do VoN 3.

Me: “I just drank a major slayer pot and I don’t want to lose it.”

Vey: “They pause when you’re in a quest.”

Me: “No, they keep ticking down when you’re in any dungeon area.”

Vey: “No they don’t.”

Me: “Yes they do.”

This continued for a bit. And when I say “a bit,” I mean probably at least five minutes. Until finally…

Me: “I’ll bet you 10K plat they keep ticking in any dungeon.”

Vey: “Make it 100K plat and you’re on.”

I wasn’t close enough to any of the quests to check it out myself, so Vey drank a slayer pot and stepped into… some Gianthold quest, I think. And told me that his pot did indeed go on pause.

I didn’t believe him. But by that time I wasn’t TOO awfully far from Breaking the Ranks, so I headed there and stepped in… and sure enough, my slayer pot paused.

Not sure when that got changed. I’m pretty darn sure it didn’t USED to be that way. But I like the change! So I didn’t really mind coughing up 100K plat (yes, I paid up).

But back to getting those XPs… her jaunt through Storm Horns made some serious headway in Meren’s quest to 30. Didn’t hurt that she hit a number of Monster Manual marks, too. Vey and I followed that with VoN 3, a couple runs through Memoirs of an Illusory Larcener, Tobias (no, she didn’t get a Jibbers blade either, dammit), OoB, Wiz King… think there was something else in there as well. That left her with just over 8K to go, which evaporated after a quick zerg through BoB.

Finally! She’s 30, she’s got her divine sphere maxed so she can get the EPL feat she wants, I got a close-up screenie of her face so I can recreate her as closely as possible to how she looks now… just need to sort out her inventory and empty her TR cache. She might be back to Favored Soul as soon as tomorrow – wish her luck!

And you might have noticed the blog looks a bit different. Decided to spruce things up a bit – it felt a little left out after the makeover OurDDO got recently!

Streamin’ with Even is live every Sunday night at 11 pm  MIDNIGHT Eastern time. (NOTE: Start time may end up being 11 pm or midnight. From flagging to firsties

Our efforts to get all the Flower Sniffers flagged for all the things continued with this past weekend’s livestream, when Citi, Rayne, and Even (who was already flagged, but likes the area) headed out to Thunderholme to get flagged for Fire on Thunder Peak and Temple of the Deathwyrm.

Naturally, I got lost and ended up leading them to Sarva first when we’d intended to start with Dagan. Along the way, there was much laughter, a  sprinkling of DPS, and far more bad 80’s songs than one usually finds during late-night groups. And we ran, we ran so far away, we just ran, we ran all night and day-ay-ay… couldn’t get away from the Song That Never Ends, yes it went on and on my friends, one night we started singing it even knowing what it was…

You get the idea.  LOL

Also this past weekend, I was Patrick‘s guest on DDOCast #439, New Player Tips, along with the lovely BonnieBew and Propane. There was some really excellent advice for new-ish players handed out – it’s well worth a listen!

And it got me to thinking. As excellent as the advice was, a lot of it would have been completely over my head when I first started. So I started pondering the idea of doing a second livestream each week, with accompanying blog, aimed at the really, truly new and inexperienced player. Talked it over with Keava, who was totally supportive, and then, purely by coincidence, Citi made a great post about rolling up your first character.

Probably should figure out what else I need to do to get on the official stream list first – already had to bump my start time an hour later to accomodate another stream that IS on the list and wants to bump its time forward an hour, which would lead to an overlap with the start time I’ve been using for the past few months – but what the heck, I’m gonna be streaming whether I’m on the list or not.

So, plan is, pick a night – probably somewhere between Monday and Thursday – and a time – probably midnight – roll up a brand-spankin’-new 28-point free-to-play (something). Probably a rogue, ’cause Citi’s making a paladin, and despite his assurances that his paladin will be fully capable of finding traps via face, it’d be nice to be able to disarm them. No twink  gear, no loans from other toons – 100% newbie compatible. Start with the character creation screen and go from there. Should be fun!

In other news, you might have noticed that OurDDO has been UPDATED! Tried to streamline it a bit, and the blogroll should be pretty current. Removed a couple of blogs that no longer exist or violated the rules. AFAIK, other than blogs in violation, it now has every DDO blog in existence.

To twinfinity… and beyond!

Sere and Taurriel

Talk about déjà vu!

Got my first glimpse of Keava’s new Shadar-Kai Taurriel tonight, and she looked… strangely familiar. I knew I’d seen that rogue before, but where?

Right on my login screen, that’s where. The hair color is different, and Taurriel’s eyes are darker, but otherwise she’s the spitting image of my own Seregeth.

This could come in handy when questing. One sneaky rogue sidles up and gets the enemy’s attention. The mobs whirl around to attack – and see what they think is that same sneaky rogue waaaaay on the other side of the dungeon. While they’re scratching their heads and going, “Wait, what?” the twin rogues whip out their trusty daggers and start assassinating. I like it!

Even and 3BC airship

Just some random thoughts tonight, because I had a most awesome weekend-into-Monday and I’m exhausted. Slvr discovered that if you climb the bell tower in Three-Barrel Cove when the rare encounter airship Ill Fate is up, you can get a great look at it from above. You can also land on it, which I didn’t get a chance to do because Slvr blew it up too fast. Sure beats trying to fire a ballista when a horde of angry pirates are swinging their whirly chains at you!

Meren and death_adurnac

Had a strange, slightly cool, and slightly creepy thing happen in a guild run of heroic Shroud Friday night. Everything had been perfectly normal – well, as normal as things can be when the Flower Sniffers of Destiny get together – until Phase 5. My gimpy li’l rogue Meren had grabbed Adur-Nac and was pulling him away so that he could be killed when she noticed that something weird was going on with his name.

He had the correct floaty text in Phase 2, but he kept his “death_adurnac” moniker throughout Phase 5, or at least until we killed him. No one noticed if his “ghost” form also had the glitch. I’ve never seen that in Shroud before, and as many times as I’ve run Shroud, that’s saying something. So it was kinda neat… even though seeing “death” in front of Adur-Nac’s name didn’t settle gimpy Meren’s nerves any.

Yes, it’s a picture of a dretch. Because I can. Grabbed it from a splash screen because I was too tired lazy to dig through all my screenies looking for a good dretch shot. Dretches rock, and we need more of them. And we especially need dretch cosmetic pets. I have it on pretty good authority that this won’t happen for a long time if ever, but I’ll never give up hope. C’mere, little dretch! Glarb! Eat my sorrow and drink my pain! NUM!

Citi wrote about dretches in a blog post a while back, suggesting that they need a little theme music when they fall under the spell of Otto’s Irresistible Dance. The cool thing about the DDO blogging community is that, with a few exceptions (as anyone who’s read some of the comment sections on my blog knows, heh heh), we enjoy helping each other out. The lovely grimorde obliged Citi with a video giving dretches their right to party. It’s 18 seconds you’ll thank me for, I promise!

Potions of Wonder

The Flower Sniffers are getting down to the serious business of trying to get everybody flagged for everything. Keava made us a cool spreadsheet in Google Docs (we tried using forum posts first, but the alt-itis some of us – yes, ME – suffer from kinda made that too clunky) so that we can all put in our characters and what they’ve run. Slvr added a few quest arcs… now all I need is the ambition to go through all of my toons and see who’s flagged for what.

And at some point, we really need to have a nekkid guild fun run/raid night with EVERYBODY. Because Acanthia’s bank is starting to fill up with Potions of Wonder. The pic is from a couple of weeks ago; she now has close to 1,500 wonder pots. The plan is to get the entire guild on, take our clothes off, head into a raid, pass a stack of pots to everybody, and start chugging. That’ll definitely be one for the livestream!

Speaking of the stream, I’m moving to midnight (Eastern) Sundays from 11 pm so as not to conflict with any other streams.

Last, but certainly not least – today will mark the 200th issue to the DDO Chronicle! May you have many, many more!

Of pets and raids and EE Shindy

This past Sunday’s livestream featured Even and Gonari duoing the epic elite Sschindylryn chain. Keava couldn’t join in, as he was splitting his time between work and leveling up his newly-TRed warlock… maybe that’s why this week, while there were certainly some laughs, nobody tried to grab Elminster’s thingie, or offered their Pale Rod to anyone, or told everyone to stop beating up Draya Dun’Robar so we could check and see if the Drow commander was male or female. Must work on that!

Next week’s livestream will probably be EE Demonweb. DRETCHES! Yay! You can watch live at 11 pm Eastern time on Sunday by visiting my Twitch channel.

Blonde bear cub

The past week also marked the acquisition of Dandelion, my new blonde bear cub cosmetic pet, aka Creature Companion #94. Just finished a run of Fall of Truth to farm wraiths; still need nearly 2,400  of those for the wraith pet. I don’t get it. Vey doesn’t play nearly as much as I do, doesn’t farm wraiths, and only needs about 900. And then it will be on to the rust monster, unless of course DDO introduces another cosmetic pet that’s easier to farm. *koff*DRETCHALREADY*koff*

Seven Flower Sniffers at once!

But the BEST thing that happened last week was our Friday guild night, when we had seven – SEVEN! – Flower Sniffers on at the same time! And in the same quest! We’d nearly given up on Runn when she finally showed up… and told us she had never, ever run Chronoscope before, ever. We were in the bank fight by that time, so we told her where to find the quest and how to get to the tavern, and then ran back and collected her. And passed her some loot, because she DID NOT PIKE! She told us! Keava made it on despite the U.S./Australia time difference, new guildie Cerah also made it for what I think was her first guild night run with us, and we even talked Citi into rolling up a toon and joining us! The stars must have been aligned pretty well, or maybe it’s the strawberry moon that’s out tonight… we were only short Shin and Seki, who have this weird concept about real life coming before DDO. Pffft.  LOL

‘Twas a super fun run that went amazingly well – elite Chrono at level can be a bit dicey, especially with a first-timer, a transplant from another server with no gear, and two members who haven’t played much DDO in quite a while… not to mention five PuGgers of unknown origin. But I’m pretty sure we had only three or four deaths total, which was less than the number of Hellfire Crossbows that dropped and weren’t wanted by anyone!

Hopefully this Friday we’ll get another good Flower Sniffin’ turnout for guild night. Hmmm… I’m not normally much into PvP, but a guild one might be fun. I might even stream that!

Filkin’ Around: “Pally”

Our little band of Flower Sniffers of Destiny has been shortmanning raids of late – raids because they’re fun, shortmanning because of the lag monster.

During a fun but failed (because we let too many good guys die) attempt to four-man Defiler of the Just the other night, Seki said that Even seemed impossible to kill.

He mentioned that again tonight, after a successful three-man Fall of Truth and a not quite as successful Fire on Thunder Peak, also three-manned. We were actually not doing badly in FotP until Even accidentally grabbed the aggro of BOTH dragons and couldn’t shake it. PDK flesh must be a gourmet delicacy to dragons; even when she turtled up and let Seki and Gonari – neither of whom is any slouch when it comes to DPS – go after the dragons, all the dragons wanted was paladin shish kebab.

Sooo, no completion since you can’t damage either dragon if they’re near each other, and with them both aggroed hard on Even, there was no way we were going to get them separated. Eventually Seki had to log – real life, sleep, that kind of nonsense.  😉

I considered recalling, but RESPAWNING HELLHOUNDS. And I do not – YET – have a hellhound pet.

Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. A couple hundred hellhounds later, my fingers were cramping up and I was feeling almost ready to pack it in. Almost, but not quite. “I’ll just keep going until she dies,” I told myself. I figured it wouldn’t be terribly long before I ran out of both mana and Lay On Hands. I was right – kinda. The outdated con-op goggles Even wears, although they took a heck of a beating, kept replenishing her spell points when she got too low to Cocoon. Her Lay on Hands regenerate – not terribly quickly, but fast enough. Oh, and she’s using Terminus, which tosses a hjeal on her every so often when she gets hit.

No, Even wasn’t going down without a fight. “OK,” I thought, “I’m just going to stop hjealing her.”

But there was the not insignificant matter of those random shield hjeals, and then there was this nifty thing called Eternal Defender – short version, if Even’s hit points drop below zero but not lower than her range of unconsciousness, she immediately gets a hjeal. And with her crazy high heal amp, it’s a pretty nice hjeal, too. Oh, and I can’t remember the exact number, but her range of unconsciousness extends pretty far.

I stopped blocking. I took off her armor (Breastplate of the Celestial Avenger). I unequipped her shield…

… none of which helped. She still stood there very much alive for an inordinate amount of time considering there were two dragons, a bevy of magma brutes, hordes of skellies, the occasional necromancer, and, oh yeah, those hellhounds, all trying very hard to kill her.

I don’t know exactly how long she actually lasted. She’d been going for quite a while before I got the idea to start up the video capture, and the first capture went for maybe 10 minutes before failing because I ran out of disk space. (Oops.) After that, I tried to stop each video somewhere around a minute; ended up with four short clips I strung together, chopped the beginning off so it’d match the length of the song, and put on my filk hat. (No, I don’t really have a filk hat. Maybe I should get one.)

tl;dr: I tried really hard to kill Even. It took a while.

Lyrics are NOT in this post because I FINALLY GOT CAPTIONS TO WORK! GO CAPTIONS! If you don’t see them, click the little “CC” button near the bottom right of the player.

Sadly, I don’t know how to contact Dolores O’Riordan to see if she’d sing my lyrics to the Cranberries’ hit “Zombie.” I used Karafun’s karaoke version for this video.

Flower-sniffing beholder

A vacation is a wonderful thing, and one that I haven’t indulged in for a good long while. In real life, I’m the primary person who deals with a very difficult family member; there’s also currently another close relative who is doing his level best to stir up drama. It’s been… stressful.

So when my cousin asked me if I wanted to house-sit for her while she and her family took their own vacation, I jumped at the chance. A week and a half of having a house to myself, watching whatever I want on TV, not having to share a bathroom, two hours from home? YES, please!

I miss DDO – I don’t have a computer here, just my tablet. I kinda miss my nail polish, LOL. And I REALLY miss my cats, although my cousin’s two cats are great.

But I’m having the MOST awesome time. I’ve caught up on some reading, done some legwork on my next novel project (it’s got an ice dragon in it. That’s all I’m sayin’ for now), drew a guild logo, and taught myself to play “Soft Kitty,” the theme from “Jurassic Park,” “Red River Valley,” and a few other assorted songs on the recorder.

I also went through DDO Wiki and made a list of every cosmetic pet ever released, and after doing a quick count, realized that I’m one short – my stable says I have 66 pets, but I should have 67. I’ll definitely have to check that out once I get home.

Sadly, my R&R comes to an end Sunday. I’m definitely going to make the most of my last few days.

Bracing for a new beginning

If you follow Players Helping Players, you may already know that my computer is being particularly temperamental right now, so my playing time until next Friday (when the PC goes in to be fixed) is iffy at best.

Tonight it seems to be running fine, although it took about an hour of running diagnostics and repair to get that way, and I figured I’d blog a bit because, well, I can.

My current project is completing as many sagas as possible on Even before Update 23 hits, because as much as she’s loved her monk life, she really, really, REALLY can’t wait to be a paladin again, especially with the paladin-friendly changes coming in U23. She’s got all of the epic sagas done along with heroic 3BC, so now she just needs to finish heroic Gianthold and the two heroic Eveningstar sagas.

Sadly for my other toons, they’ve been terribly neglected while Even farms sagas… poor Acanthia and some of her sisters actually went three weeks without being logged in. Once Even begins her third life (which will be my first-ever legend build – I don’t TR much – and will be as a Purple Dragon Knight; still undecided on whether I’m splashing fighter on her or using a heart to get rid of that first fighter level), everybody’s playing time should start balancing out a lot better.

In almost four years, I really haven’t done much reincarnating. Even did a greater reincarnate a few years ago, and Dissy did a lesser. Even and Acanthia have each done one epic TR, while Even, Jall, Chalei, and Char have each done one heroic TR. TRing, to me, is a lot of grinding with the alt-itis I have. When I find something I want to improve or fix on a toon, I tend to swap out a feat, or reset enhancements, or get some better gear… and that’s worked out pretty well for me so far. I’m getting pretty good at keeping pace with Vey on his multi-TRed legend builds. Even my gimpier toons can solo EE Rusted Blades and Impossible Demands the “easy” way… although the “hard” way is a totally different story for some of them. LOL

Trying to level up Char and Even at the same time after their TRs was a royal pain in the neck, but I think Char is going to TR once she hits 20. I actually felt she was stronger in her first life than she is now, and after watching Slvr eTR his bard into a swashbuckler, I MUST give that a try! Dissy’s a bit too Valley Girl to really be suited for swashbuckling, but I think Char will be a natural.

So I’m off to log Even in and work on the last sagas she needs, then I’m going to drink a renown pot and turn them all in. Hopefully my NVidia card will cooperate and not gift me with the joy that is multiple BSoDs (Blue Screens of Death) in the meantime!
